DEFINITIONS:
Alopecia - The general scientific term for hair loss.
Alopecia Areata - ("baldness in spots") is a form of hair loss
from areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Because it causes bald spots on
the head especially in the first stages, it is also called spot baldness. Hair
loss can extend to eyebrows, eyelashes, facial and nasal hair and create more
bald spots elsewhere in the body.
Alopecia Totalis - The loss of all head hair. Its causes are unclear, but
it is an autoimmune disorder, and can be the result of stress.
Alopecia Universalis - A rare disorder that causes the afflicted to be
incapable of producing hair anywhere on the body, from birth.
Seborrhea - Skin condition which may be characterized by inflammation,
dry or oily scaling or crusting and/or itchiness.
Seborrheic Dermatitis: Common inflammatory condition that results from an
increase in sebum production and primarily affects the face, scalp and groin.
Sebum - An oily secretion manufactured by tiny sebaceous glands near the
follicles that keeps the hair lubricated and shiny.
Trichotilomania - A type of alopecia caused by the constant pulling and
twirling of the hair in a specific area of scalp.
